African Unity Square (formerly Cecil Square) is where the Union Jack was raised to mark the arrival of the British in 1890. Renamed after independence, the square reflects Zimbabwe's tumultuous history. It was once a venue for popular gatherings and demonstrations and a flower market, but for political reasons neither of these activities take place any longer. Today it is home to magnificent mauve Jacaranda trees and the Anglican Cathedral, with a colourful interior and peaceful gardens, which marks the site of Zimbabwe's first mud church
